Hanging a full sheet of panel siding breaks into four things: lifting it, positioning it, holding it still, and fastening it off. The second person is irreplaceable for the lift and the position, because a 4x8 sheet is heavy, awkward and has to land level, plumb and correctly spaced against the course beside it. The phase a support tool removes is the holding. That is the phase that burns crew time and puts a person under a load with no free hands. Removing it does not remove the second person, and any tool sold on the claim that it does is selling you something the job will not give back.
The four phases of hanging one sheet
Lift. The sheet comes off the stack and goes up the wall. Two sets of hands, one at each end.
Position. The sheet has to land on the line, sit level, hold its edge spacing against the course beside it, and land flat against the studs. This is fine adjustment at both ends at once, and it is the reason a single person struggles even when they can carry the weight.
Hold. The sheet is where it needs to be and now it has to stay there. Nothing is being built during this phase. It is pure standing still.
Fasten. The panel gets fastened off to the manufacturer's schedule.
Only one of those four is dead time, and it is the one that has a person pinned under a load. That is the phase worth engineering away.
Why the weight matters more than it looks
Suppliers commonly list a 4x8 sheet of fiber cement panel at roughly 75 to 80 pounds, and 5/8 inch plywood panel siding at somewhere around 55 to 60 pounds. Check the published figure for the exact product you are running, because it varies by thickness and by manufacturer.
For context on what that means as a lift: the revised lifting equation published by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health uses a load constant of 51 pounds as the maximum recommended weight, and that figure applies under ideal conditions. Ideal means the load is compact, close to the body, at waist height, not twisted, and lifted infrequently.
A 4x8 sheet is none of those things. It is held away from the body, often overhead or off staging, at the far end of a long lever, repeatedly, all day. The published number is not a limit anybody is close to meeting on this task, and that gap is the whole reason the job takes two people.
What the second person is actually for
It is easy to describe the helper as a pair of hands holding weight. On a panel wall that undersells it. The second person is doing the half of the positioning that cannot be done from the other end of the sheet: watching the edge spacing while you watch the line, catching the drift when the sheet wants to slide, and keeping the top from coming off the wall while the bottom gets set.
A support tool does not do any of that. It holds a bottom edge at a fixed height. Everything above that is still a two-person operation, which is why the published EZpanl guidance calls for a minimum two-person crew at all times and states plainly that the system is not a replacement for a second worker.
So what does a support actually buy you
It takes the hold phase off the crew. Instead of two people standing still under a sheet while a third set of hands would be needed to fasten, the sheet rests on the support and both people have their hands back. The crew that was holding is now positioning, checking the spacing and fastening off.

We are not going to tell you this lets one person side a house. It does not. We are not publishing a time saving, because we have not measured one on a real job, and a number invented in an office is worth nothing to a crew that has to hit a schedule.
