If you hang full rigid panel siding, here are the real options for holding a panel while you fasten it, and how they actually differ.
For full panel siding, your options are an improvised cleat, a panel clamp such as the PacTool Z-Clamp, a starter-course hanger such as Dodge Hangers, a lap-siding gauge such as the Gecko Gauge (built for horizontal plank, not full panels), or a row of support hooks like the EZpanl kit. They differ in how they attach, how many support points they give you, and whether they leave holes to patch.
Gecko Gauge, Malco and similar
Self-gauging siding gauges are built for horizontal lap plank. They hook on the course below to set the next lap. They are not designed to support a full rigid panel, so for T1-11 and engineered-wood panels they are the wrong tool for the job, not a cheaper version of it.
PacTool Z-Clamp and similar
Panel clamps grip the Z-flashing at the top of the course below and give you a shelf to rest on. They leave no holes and move course to course. The limits: they need flashing to grip, and a pair supports the panel at only two points, so a long sheet can sag or pivot between them.
Dodge Hangers
Small hangers sold for starting a course on sheathing and siding, listed by the maker for plywood, OSB, T1-11 and cement board. They are inexpensive per piece and aimed at getting the first row set and level. Worth a look if the starter course is the part giving you trouble.
A screwed scrap ledger
Free, and every crew has done it. The cost is time: build it, hang the course, back the screws out, patch the holes, and rebuild one course up, on every wall. It also leaves a row of holes in the sheathing or the water-resistive barrier to seal.
A kit of 16 support hooks
The hooks nail to the wall along a level line, each with one fastener, and the panel rests across the hooks beneath it. They mount independently of the flashing, and the fastener ends up behind the finished panel rather than in the finished face.

A note on what we took out of this table. It used to carry a cost-per-support-point row, roughly $12 for us against roughly $50 for a clamp set. We removed it because it flattered us. Dividing each package price by the number of pieces in it treats one hook as equivalent to one clamp, and it is not: a set of two clamps is one deployment on a panel, and how many hooks a given sheet needs depends on the current EZpanl instructions, which we do not publish as a number. The prices above are simply what each one sells for.

How to choose
- Hanging lap plank? A lap-siding gauge is your tool. This page is about full panels.
- Full panels, you have flashing, shorter sheets? A panel clamp is clean and quick.
- Struggling with the starter course specifically? Starter-course hangers are built for that one problem and cost little.
- Full walls, production siding, or bare sheathing? A row of support hooks rests the panel across the hooks beneath it, sets a repeatable line, and avoids the exposed ledger-board holes and patching associated with common temporary-cleat methods. That is what the EZpanl kit is built for.
Whichever you choose, panel siding is a minimum two-person job and your panel manufacturer sets the fastening, flashing, and clearance schedule. A support tool holds the panel steady. It does not replace a second worker or the manufacturer's requirements.
