Whatever you set along the line, its only job is to make the wall carry the sheet.
A 4x8 siding panel is held by whatever you set along your level line, and crews use one of five things: nails tacked part way along the snapped line, scrap cleats screwed to the wall, a screwed ledger board, flashing clamps that grip Z-flashing, or siding hooks nailed along the line. The first three are free and the trade-off is that each has to be leveled, fastened and removed on every course, and a ledger leaves fastener holes in the finished face. The point of all five is the same: get the wall carrying the sheet so both hands are free to fasten.
The whole job comes down to one question: what is holding the sheet while you fasten it? Get that right and two people set a full sheet without fighting it. Get it wrong and you are wrestling a full sheet against a wall with no hands left to reach for a nail gun.
Step 1. Snap a level line
Set a level line where the bottom edge of the course will sit. Use a level or a laser rather than measuring off the foundation, because foundations are not reliably level and the error compounds into every course above.
Step 2. Give the sheet something to rest on
This is the step that matters. The wall should carry the weight, not a person. Five ways crews do it, and what each one costs you:
Tacked nails
Drive a few nails part way along your snapped line and rest the sheet on them. Free, immediate, and the most common answer on contractor forums. The heads are small, so the sheet can roll off one if it is bumped, and you are pulling and re-driving nails on every course.
Scrap cleats
Offcuts screwed to the wall along the line. More surface for the sheet to sit on than a nail head. You are cutting, leveling and removing them each course.
A screwed ledger board
A straight board run along the line. The most stable of the improvised options and the easiest to level. It has to be fastened and removed on every course, and it leaves fastener holes in the finished face that need attention. More on ledger boards here.
Flashing clamps
Clamps that grip Z-flashing to create a ledge for the sheet to rest on. They leave no holes and move course to course. They need flashing present to grip, and a pair supports the sheet at two points.
Siding hooks
Purpose-built hooks that nail along the line, each with one fastener, and hold the bottom edge of the sheet across the row rather than at two points. They mount independently of the flashing. That is what we make, covered below.
Step 3. Lift and set the bottom edge down
Two people, one at each end, lifting from the ground rather than from a stooped position. Set the bottom edge down onto whatever you put along the line. The sheet is now held at the right height. A 4x8 sheet runs roughly 38 lb to 77 lb depending on the product, and we put every published figure with its source here.
Step 4. Check before you commit
Plumb the vertical edge and confirm the bottom edge is still on your line. Nothing about this gets cheaper after the first fastener goes in.
Step 5. Nail it off
Both hands free. Follow the fastener schedule in your panel manufacturer's instructions, which govern.
Step 6. Remove the supports and move up a course
They sit where the next sheet needs to go, so how fast they come off is part of the job rather than a detail.
Where EZpanl fits
Our 16-piece siding hook kit is 16 powder-coated 11-gauge steel hooks and one EZhandle. The hooks nail to the wall along your level line through the angled slot, using the fastener called out in the current EZpanl instructions. The bottom edge of the sheet rests on the feet, the blades sit behind the panel once it is set, and only the feet show below the bottom edge. To release, tap up on the exposed bottom of the hook and it comes off the nail.

What goes wrong
- The sheet drifts after the first fastener. Usually because it was taking its own weight on the fasteners rather than resting on something.
- The line was measured off the foundation. The error shows up three courses later and there is no good fix by then.
- Nobody checked plumb before nailing off. The first sheet sets the wall.
- Supports removed too early. Leave them until the sheet is fastened to the schedule, not until it feels held.
