How do you hold a siding panel in place while you fasten it?

The honest rundown of every option a crew uses to support a full rigid panel, and where a purpose-built hook fits.

Crews hold a full siding panel with one of four methods: a second set of hands, an improvised screwed ledger board, a pair of panel clamps that grip the flashing, or a row of purpose-built support hooks that nail to the wall. Hooks and clamps free the crew's hands to position and fasten. A screwed ledger leaves a row of holes to patch. Whichever you use, panel siding still calls for a minimum two-person crew and the manufacturer's fastening and flashing schedule.

Hanging a full sheet of panel siding, T1-11 or an engineered-wood panel, is a different job from lapping plank. The sheet is heavy, it has to land level on the first course or the whole wall follows it crooked, and it will not stay where you put it while you reach for a nailer. Here is every way crews solve that, and the trade-off each one carries.

The four ways crews support a panel

1. A second set of hands

The oldest method, and still the baseline. One person holds and levels while the other fastens. It works, but it pins a worker under the panel for the whole course, and hands that are holding weight are not checking the reveal or driving fasteners. It is also why panel siding is a minimum two-person job in the first place.

2. An improvised screwed ledger or cleat

Screw a scrap board to the wall at the right height, rest the course on it, fasten off, then back the screws out and patch the holes before the next row. It is free and every crew has done it. The cost shows up as time: you build, tear down, and patch a ledger on every wall, every course, and you are left with a row of screw holes in the sheathing or the housewrap to seal.

3. Panel clamps that grip the flashing

Z-type panel clamps grip the Z-flashing at the top of the course below and give you a shelf to rest on. They leave no holes and move course to course. The limits are that they depend on having flashing to grip, and a pair of clamps supports the panel at just two points, so a long sheet can still sag or pivot between them.

4. Purpose-built support hooks

A row of hooks nails to the wall along a level line, each with a single fastener, and the panel's bottom edge rests on the hooks beneath it. Because it is a row rather than two points, the sheet is carried at more places along its bottom edge than a pair of clamps gives you. The hooks mount independently of the flashing, and the single fastener ends up behind the installed panel rather than in the finished face. How to choose

  • Occasional single panel: a second set of hands is fine. You do not need gear for one sheet.
  • You have flashing and hang short panels: clamps are clean and quick.
  • Full walls, production siding, or bare sheathing: a row of support hooks rests the panel across the hooks beneath it, sets a repeatable line, and avoids the exposed ledger-board holes and patching associated with common temporary-cleat methods. That is the case the EZpanl kit is built for.

No support tool changes what a safe, compliant install requires. Panel siding calls for a minimum two-person crew, and the panel manufacturer sets the fastener pattern, clearances, flashing, and water-resistive-barrier details.
