What tools do you need to install panel siding?

The kit a crew actually carries for 4x8 panels, what changes on fiber cement, and the one item most lists leave off.

Short answer

Five groups: layout and levelling tools to set the line, a saw and blade matched to the material, a fastening tool with the manufacturer's specified fasteners, flashing and water-management materials, and something to hold the sheet against the wall while you fasten it. The list changes most between engineered wood and fiber cement, because fiber cement needs a different blade and real dust control. The item most tool lists leave off is the last one, holding the sheet, which is the part crews actually improvise on site.

Layout and levelling

  • Chalk line, for the starting line and the fastener lines
  • A good 4 ft level, and a laser or water level for long walls where a short level accumulates error
  • Tape, speed square, and a straightedge for cuts
  • A story pole if you are holding a reveal across several elevations
  • Stud marker or a way to carry stud locations up the wall, since panel joints have to land on framing

Cutting

  • Engineered wood and plywood panels. A circular saw with a sharp fine-tooth blade, and a jigsaw for cutouts around penetrations.
  • Fiber cement. A different job. Manufacturers specify a polycrystalline diamond blade, and cutting produces respirable crystalline silica dust, so follow the manufacturer's published cutting method and the workplace exposure rules that apply to you. Shears are an option on some products and produce far less dust than sawing.
  • Cut outside, downwind, and keep the cut station away from the crew where you can.

Fastening

  • A nailer sized for the fastener your panel manufacturer specifies, or a hammer if you are hand nailing
  • Corrosion resistant fasteners to the manufacturer's specification. This is not a place to substitute what is in the truck
  • A nail set, for the times a fastener has to be finished by hand

Flashing and water management

  • Water-resistive barrier and the tape that goes with it
  • Z-flashing and head flashing, cut and lapped to the manufacturer's detail
  • Sealant of the type the manufacturer names, and a decent gun

Holding the sheet

This is the group most lists skip, and it is the one crews end up solving with whatever is on the ground. A full sheet will not stay where you put it, so you need one of: a second set of hands, a scrap board screwed to the wall as a cleat, a pair of clamps that grip the Z-flashing, or a row of support hooks nailed along a level line. Access and protection

  • Staging or ladders appropriate to the wall, plus fall protection where the work calls for it
  • Eye and hearing protection, and respiratory protection matched to the material you are cutting
  • Gloves that let you feel a panel edge, because a sheet you cannot grip is a sheet you drop

Whichever you use

Panel siding is a minimum two-person job, and your panel manufacturer sets the fastener type and pattern, the flashing details, and the clearances. Tools make the day easier. They do not change what a compliant install requires, and they are not a substitute for the current instructions for your specific panel.
