Replacing improvised ledger boards on panel siding work

The scrap-cleat routine works, but it costs you time on every wall and leaves holes to patch. Here is the honest trade-off, and what replaces it.

The cost is not the board. It is building it, tearing it down, and patching the wall on every course.

Short answer

An improvised ledger board is a scrap board screwed to the wall to rest a course of siding on while you fasten it. It works, but you build it, hang the course, back the screws out, patch the holes, and rebuild it one course up, on every wall. A row of purpose-built support hooks does the same job with a single fastener per hook that ends up behind the finished panel rather than in the finished face, which avoids the exposed ledger-board holes and patching associated with common temporary-cleat methods, and leaves no board to rebuild between courses.

What a ledger board actually costs

Every crew has screwed a straight scrap to the wall to catch a course. It is free and it is familiar. The cost is not the board, it is the routine around it.

  • Build and tear down, every course. You level and fasten the ledger, hang the course, then remove it and move up. Multiply that by every wall on the job.
  • A row of holes to seal. The screws leave holes in the sheathing or, worse, in the water-resistive barrier. Every one is a place water can find and has to be sealed.
  • It only supports where the board is. A single ledger holds the bottom edge, but you still fight the panel side to side and top to bottom while you fasten.

What replaces it

A row of support hooks nails to the wall along a level support line, each with one fastener. The panel rests across all of them, not just one board. Because the fastener sits behind the installed panel rather than in the finished face, it avoids the exposed ledger-board holes and patching associated with common temporary-cleat methods, and to move up a course you tap the hook off and reset it rather than rebuilding.

When a ledger board still makes sense

For a single patch panel or a one-off repair, a scrap ledger is fine. You do not need a system for one sheet. The math changes when you are siding full walls or running production, where the build-teardown-patch cycle repeats all day.

Whichever you use

Panel siding is a minimum two-person job, and your panel manufacturer sets the fastener and flashing schedule. A support method holds the panel steady so your hands are free. It does not replace a second worker or the manufacturer's requirements.
